True leaders empower those they lead to excel, not micromanage or carry them along. Much of our “programming” is wrong as leaders, educators, and parents. We have originated and evolved into a world of enablers and blamers, where people don’t take responsibility for themselves. Especially in a leadership position we must make people accountable. The most successful companies and people in the world all say they had the right people on the “bus”, not slackers or those who didn’t constantly raise the bar. As a leader, first we set the example and create the bar, but more importantly we don’t enable people to be complacent, slack, or not strive for their highest personal potential. Yes, everyone deserves a chance. We set our expectations and let them find their way, BUT we must hold them accountable to those expectations, not accept excuses or excuse not meeting them. There must be consequences. Globally there are always consequences; lost sales, customers or profits, bankruptcy or even war. If people learned no one was going to pick up their slack, take care of them, or rescue them maybe more people would reach their true potential… © Jodi Healy
